ndis functional capacity assessment

A comprehensive evidence-based FCA for your participant.

CARED's occupational therapists specialise in NDIS Functional Capacity Assessments. Our detailed, evidence-based reports clearly document how a disability affects daily life and set out the supports we recommend. Plan-managed and self-managed welcome.

A weak FCA costs more than you think

“You've done everything right.”

But if the assessment is generic, templated or rushed, important everyday needs can go under-documented and unclear. A vague report makes it harder for anyone reading it to understand what your participant actually experiences day to day.

Our OTs focus on documenting the full, specific picture: what support is needed, how often, and why. Clear, evidence-based reporting helps ensure your participant's needs are described accurately and in detail.

Plan reviews happen on a fixed cycle, so it's worth allowing enough time to complete a thorough assessment ahead of the next review. The NDIA makes all funding decisions.

When you refer to , for an FCA, you unlock an entire allied health team

Most FCA providers stop at the assessment. CARED is different. One referral connects your participant to eight specialist services - so when the OT identifies a speech or psychology need, that support is already in the room.

What makes a CARED FCA different

A detailed FCA goes beyond a checklist - it documents how a disability affects daily life and explains the rationale for each support recommended.

Specific, not generic
We document real examples. Rather than "participant requires support with daily tasks," we record what tasks, how often, and with what level of assistance.
Linked to NDIS goals
Every recommendation is tied to the participant's stated goals and the relevant support category.
Risk and functional impact
We document what can happen without support - including safety risks, carer strain, and impact across life domains.
Clear, justified recommendations
Recommendations include frequency, rationale and supporting evidence, so the report is clear and easy to follow.

Common red flags in weaker FCAs:

x
Vague language with no participant-specific examples or support rationale
x
No link between recommendations and the participant's NDIS goals
x
Missing risk assessment or consequences of not receiving support
x
Focuses only on best - day functioning, not real-day variability

What a FCA covers

Our OTs assess functional capacity across every life domain the NDIA evaluates - producing a comprehensive, evidence-based report that stands up at plan review.

Mobility and physical function–movement in home and community
Self-care - personal hygiene, dressing, eating, toileting
Communication - expression, comprehension, AAC needs
Self-management - medications, finances, scheduling
Learning and cognition - memory, concentration, following instructions
Social interaction and emotional regulation
Home environment and safety risk assessment
Recommendations by support category (Core, Capacity Building, Capital)
Justification for SIL, SDA, assistive technology, and home modifications
Support Coordinator Tip
Consider submitting your FCA referral 6–8 weeks before a plan review. Fast-track options may be available for urgent referrals - ask us about current availability.
